Science
Believe ~ Grow ~ Flourish
“Jesus came to give us life, life in all its fullness”
Our vision at Brigstock Latham’s Primary School is to instil a lifelong love of science within our pupils. Children are naturally curious about the world around them and we encourage our children to follow their curiosity to become inquisitive and enthusiastic learners. We want to equip our children to understand the importance and use of science today and in the future.
We strive to make our science teaching and learning exciting, memorable and creative through great learning opportunities both indoors and outdoors. Key skills and knowledge are taught in weekly science lessons that are a balance of scientific knowledge and practical skills. Progression is mapped out across year groups from EYFS to Year 6 to meet each year group’s learning objectives, as set by the National Curriculum. Each teacher will choose content to work with their science theme and match it with the appropriate skills to learn using the progression steps to guide them. Sequences of lessons are planned, and teachers use assessment for learning to tailor their lessons and cater for the abilities of their current class. We ensure that the working scientifically skills are built upon and developed throughout the children’s time at our school, so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts.
We aim for children in our school to have a coherent knowledge and understanding of the scientific content they have been taught, and to be encouraged to use scientific vocabulary within their explanations. This knowledge, alongside scientific skills, will enable the children to ask perceptive questions to further their learning, think critically when setting up an investigation and use their understanding to draw relevant conclusions.
